WHY WE GO

Our friends in Haiti tell us that our coming to Haiti is just as important as what we bring or send to them.  We represent hope to them and when they see us they know that their prayers have been answered and help is coming.  They have nothing to give us and are always looking for things that they can do for us, small acts of kindness that are so rare in our lives at home that they are very special to us and deeply touch our hearts.

......a bowl of cool water to wash our hands after a long journey to their village, finding our shoes have been cleaned when we wake up in the morning, someone fanning us with their hat during a church service, or someone just holding our hand...and smiling.

We don't speak Creole (the native language) very well....but we understand the language of love. RESPECT is very important to these people, so when it is given to you, you  know you have been given a precious gift.

" Truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for the least of these my brethren, you did it for Me."
                                                                                    ( Matthew 25:40 )

One of our friends from another village will walk most of the night to come to spend the day with us and accompany us on a Day Trip, only to make the trip back to his village at the end of the day after we have gone to sleep.

The trips are not easy for us.. they are physically challenging.....we are not used to the heat, the food or the living conditions.....but what we get from the interaction with the people is so important, we always feel like we leave with so much more than what we took.

There is NOTHING comfortable in Haiti.  All the things we take for granted are unheard of to them: featherbeds, soft pillows, bubble baths, overstuffed chairs, air conditioning, even the things that we consider necessities like: paved highways, running water, electricity...all these things are either non-existent or very rare.

It's always nice to come home to all of our comforts .... we really appreciate how blessed we are....but we keep remembering...

They ARE home...they don't get to experience the comforts... and if we stop what we're doing .....they never will.

If You say go, we will go
If You say wait, we will wait
If You say step out on the water
and they say it can't be done
We'll fix our eyes on You and we will come
