HOW IT ALL STARTED

HISTORY

Beacon Ministries was born ten years ago when the first trip was made by me, Barb, into the country of Haiti.   It was intended to be a one time thing, just me as part of a group going to a desperately poor country for two weeks to "do a good thing" and try to help people.

But the Haitian people didn't stay in Haiti.  They came home in my heart and filled my dreams, waking me up in the night with their beautiful, sad faces, and I knew I had to go back, had to do something.   But what could one person, or a small group of people do that would ever make a difference?

The need is so great.  But we can care enough to try ... and let God do the rest!

"Show mercy and kindness and tender compassion, every man to his brother."
( Zecharaiah 7:9 )

In November 2003, we, myself and my husband Neil, and my sister Brenda and her husband Mark, formed an Independant, Non Profit, Charitable Corporation called Beacon Ministries (Foreign Missions in Haiti) Inc.

We went to work speaking in local churches and organizations, singing songs, showing pictures and telling the story. We hold car washes, bake sales and fundraisers and will turn down no opportunity to tell of the plight of these people. We are so blessed in this country that it is difficult to imagine what their lives are really like.

Beacon Ministries raises money here in the U.S. and Canada and goes to Haiti a couple of times a year to purchase food, clothing, building materials and medical supplies. We also send monthly "support" to keep things going between trips. One hundred percent of the money raised or donated is spent in Haiti and the team members pay all of our own administrative and travel expenses for each trip.

The trip involves a four hour plane ride to Port au Prince, followed by three hours in a truck (of sorts) and another six to eight hours by boat to get to the first village. As of today, the organization provides for four villages, but concentrates on the mountain village of Moline.

At first glance it looks just the same...but if you look closely...
Through the Beacon Ministries Orphanage Project:
    * there are 50 - 85 children being fed a meal, three times a week.
    * 29 more children are able to attend school
    * There is a pregnant cow to begin the Beef program.

It's not a huge difference ...Yet... But there's alot more of something they once had none at all....Hope.

" For I know the plans I have for You, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."      ( Jeremiah 29:11 )

In March 2007 we put Constant Chery officially in place as our Representative in Haiti.  He is our Coordinator, Project Director and Advisor, Engineer, Interpreter, Driver and friend.  But most importantly he is an evangelist who desires that all Haitian people come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.

Together with the O.P.K.P. (An Association of Countrymen) Plans are being made for a headquarters to be constructed that will include:
        -- Orphanage
        -- School
-- Medical Center/ First Aid Station
        -- Office - Mission House

In November 2007 we brought Constant  to the U.S. for three weeks.   He attended an agricultural seminar in Fort Meyers, Florida, working with the E.C.H.O. organization and then traveled to New York to meet some of his supporters and attend celebration activities where he spoke about everything that is happening in Haiti.

Constant is planning be married in December 2008.  He and his wife Noncy will make their home in Ceyes, much closer to his home village of Moline, where our Headquarters is located.
